Groovin’ with Grannies
August 13, 2024
Heritage of Hudson had our first meeting of “Groovin’ with Grannies”, a new intergenerational music program for preschool-aged children and our seniors. Bridging the gap between generations has numerous benefits for both groups including developing social skills, decreasing social isolation, and increasing positive perception of aging and older adults. Offering this type of programming at Heritage of Hudson has been a long-time goal of activity director, Emily, who recruited a music therapist to help bring this project to life.
Michael is a board-certified music therapist and has experience working with both young children and seniors, among other populations. He came prepared with lots of different instruments, scarves, and equipment for a morning full of fun! The Heritage seniors sat intermingled with our seven preschool-aged visitors and their mothers for our music class. We sang songs that both groups were familiar with, such as “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and “Over the Rainbow,” as well as some songs that were new to our young friends like “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.” We also played drums, shakers, moved with scarves, and answered “get to know you” questions.
Some of the children were a little shy, but others had no reservations about dancing and singing with their new senior friends! Our seniors delighted in watching the children have fun and singing songs with them. The parents had a wonderful time, as well, and would like to continue to participate in the program! We are in the process of scheduling future “Groovin’ with Grannies,” so keep an eye out for our next date and be sure to join us for a great time!
