Heritage Singers Choir - Christmas Edition

December 29, 2022
“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” is something the Heritage Singers Choir takes to heart! Despite freezing temperatures outside, the atmosphere in the 300 Hall was warm and toasty as our singers gathered together to perform their Christmas program. Residents and staff joined in singing traditional carols and other popular Christmas songs from across the decades, including “Let it Snow,” “White Christmas," and “Silent Night.” They closed the performance with a rousing chorus of “Auld Lang Syne,” a Scottish tune traditionally sung to close out the year. Regional Marketer, Rebecca Moore, was able to attend the concert and said that the experience brought back fond memories of her grandmother.

After the show, everyone was welcome to stay for a cookie and punch reception. Dietary Manager, Marge, prepared delicious sugar cookies shaped like stars, bells, and other Christmas configurations. The Christmas punch was made with Sprite, raspberry sherbet, and fruit punch, which turned it into a festive cherry red color. Activity Director, Emily Campbell, used to help organize receptions after college band concerts and wanted to continue this tasty tradition at Heritage of Hudson!

Singing is a fun activity, but did you know there are many health benefits to singing as well? Singing can lower cortisol levels, resulting in lower stress and tension. The brain also releases oxytocin, which has been nicknamed, "the love hormone" because it reduces feelings of loneliness and depression. The Sing Up Foundation also says that singing provides a boost to the immune system, improves breathing, and can help alleviate chronic pain. Songs can also conjure pleasant memories from the past and remind us of loved ones. Many falsely believe that singing is an innate ability that people are born with, however, singing is actually a skill that can be developed with consistent practice!

Since its inception in 2019, the Heritage Singers Choir has become a favorite activity of staff and residents alike. Facility Administrator, Karen Ginder, loves to sit in on rehearsals because they brighten her day and make her smile. Past choir programs have included traditional American cowboy songs, songs of hope and peace, and leading our annual Christmas sing-a-long. The group has between 12-18 members, but they always welcome new singers, whether they join for a day, a month, or a year! They rehearse for one hour every Tuesday and the only requirement to join is a love of music. Stay tuned for our next performance this summer!
